Meat Board: No meat to enter Namibia

The Meat Board has identified a “Meat Route” that runs across the country and offers Namibia’s finest meat and meat products.
Just short of the start of the holiday season, the Meat Board of Namibia has reminded visitors to Namibia that no cloven-hooved animals or their products may be imported for own use into the country.
That comes as South Africa still reports a widespread outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
The Meat Board has rather directed visitors to their identified “Meat Route” that runs across the country and offers Namibia’s finest meat and meat products (see story on the left).
“Full co-operation regarding these measures must be given to the Directorate of Veterinary Services. Any meat products brought into Namibia without a valid veterinary import permit will be confiscated,” the Meat Board warned, while at the same time encouraging the farming community to familiarize itself with the symptoms of FMD as well as to make sure that all animals are regularly inspected.
“The current foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in South Africa poses significant risks to the FMD-free area in Namibia, specifically for the export of meat and livestock.
“Should this outbreak spill over into Namibia, it would have dire consequences for the livestock and meat industry, as well as for the economy in general,” it said.
